The Prime Minister of Ukraine met with the Secretary General of the European Evangelical Alliance: they discussed the war, demining, and the role of churches.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held a working meeting with Secretary General of the European Evangelical Alliance Jan Wessels. The event was also attended by Viktor Yelensky, Head of the State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience. This was reported by the Government Portal.

During the conversation, the parties discussed the significant contribution of Evangelical Protestant churches to social and humanitarian support for the Ukrainian people, in particular military personnel, civilians, and internally displaced persons. Particular attention was paid to the issue of demining liberated territories and ensuring the safe functioning of communities and religious organizations in these regions.

“We highly appreciate the position of the European Evangelical Alliance in support of the Ukrainian people in our struggle against Russian aggression. Evangelical churches are actively involved in the work of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. Their contribution to helping the front, the rear, and people in need is very significant,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

The prime minister also reported on gross violations of religious freedom in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Since 2014, according to Shmyhal, Russian occupation forces have killed at least 70 clergymen, Protestant communities have been systematically oppressed, pastors have been kidnapped and tortured, and the activities of independent religious communities have been completely banned.

“Ukraine is fighting for freedom — both spiritual and national,” the head of government emphasized, expressing gratitude to Jan Wessels for his solidarity, support, and prayers.

The meeting participants also discussed the importance of spiritual support for the Ukrainian people and communicating the truth about the war in Ukraine to the international community.

“We want our allies in the free world to speak the truth about Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, dignity, and faith at all levels,” the prime minister concluded.
