Russia strikes at Ukraine’s power grid on Christmas Day: over 70 missiles and attack drones

On December 25, Christmas Day, Russian troops launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The attack forced the energy company Ukrenergo to introduce emergency blackouts across the country.

DTEK’s thermal power plants were seriously damaged during the shelling. According to an official statement, the damage to the power equipment is significant.
In his address, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia fired more than 70 missiles and used more than a hundred attack drones during the attack. He emphasized that the choice of the date of the attack was not accidental:
“Every Russian massive strike takes time to prepare. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a deliberate choice not only of targets, but also of time and date. Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas to attack. What could be more inhuman? More than 70 missiles, including ballistic missiles, and more than a hundred attack drones. The targets are our energy. They continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
At the same time, he added that Ukrainian air defense forces were able to shoot down more than 50 missiles and a significant number of drones.
The United States also condemned Russia’s attack. Special Representative for Russia and Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, said that shelling during the holiday was unacceptable:
“Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, but Ukraine has been brutally attacked. It is wrong to launch large-scale missile and drone strikes on the day of God’s birth. The United States is determined to bring peace to the region as never before,” Kellogg said.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy also condemned the attacks:
“Putin chose Christmas to strike at innocent civilians in Ukraine. Zelensky is right, it is inhuman. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. We will be with them on this day and every day,” Lemmy wrote on social media.
This massive shelling is yet another proof of Russia’s attempts to create an energy crisis in Ukraine, even on a holy day for Christians.
