Trump’s statements about Ukraine: manipulation, disinformation and the reaction of the international community

Donald Trump has made a series of scandalous statements about Ukraine, accusing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of misusing US financial aid, not holding elections, and dragging out the war. These statements have caused a wide response in the United States, as well as in Ukraine and Europe, as many of the allegations are untrue.

Facts and refutations

One of Trump’s most high-profile statements was that Ukraine had received $350 billion in aid from the United States, and Zelenskyy allegedly admitted that half of these funds had “disappeared.” However, official data indicate otherwise: according to President Zelenskyy, out of the $177 billion in aid approved by the United States, Ukraine has received about $76 billion. There are no facts about the “disappearance” of the money.

Trump also claimed that Zelenskyy refuses to hold elections, hinting at a dictatorial style of governance. However, he ignored the fact that holding elections during martial law is against the Constitution of Ukraine. Moreover, the initiative to organize them in 2024 was raised by Zelenskyy himself, but due to the difficulty of ensuring voting for the military and internally displaced persons, it was postponed.

Another manipulation was Trump’s claim that Zelenskyy’s approval rating had dropped to 4%. However, according to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), Zelenskyy’s approval rating in February 2024 was 57%. KIIS director Anton Hrushetsky emphasized that the figure announced by Trump could be part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Reaction to Trump’s statements

Trump’s accusations were met with reactions in Ukraine, as well as in the United States and Europe. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga emphasized that no one can force Ukraine to capitulate.

“Ukraine has withstood the worst military attack in the modern history of Europe. The Ukrainian people and their President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused to succumb to Putin’s pressure. No one can force Ukraine to surrender,” Sibiga wrote.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence also criticized Trump’s words, reminding him who the real aggressor in this war is:

“Mr. President, Russia has launched an unprovoked and brutal invasion that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The road to peace must be built on the truth,” Pence said.

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton called Trump’s statements “shameful” and emphasized that support for Ukraine is not an act of charity, but a part of the US global security strategy.

“Our support for Ukraine has never been charity, our way of life at home depends on our strength abroad,” Bolton wrote.

Manipulations that can change the course of the United States

Trump’s statements reflect a shift in his rhetoric toward a rapprochement with the Kremlin and a willingness to reconsider U.S. support for Ukraine. This policy has already drawn criticism from Republicans, including Senator Roger Wicker, who said:

“Putin is a war criminal who should be in prison for the rest of his life. What we can trust the Russians to do is to do whatever it takes to gain an advantage.”

American and European media also condemned Trump’s position. The New York Times noted that his rhetoric looks like a return to the Cold War, but on the other side of the barricades. The New York Post emphasized that Trump’s demand to hand over part of the Ukrainian economy in exchange for support is completely wrong.

A call for truth and accountability

In light of Trump’s statements, it is important to pay attention to the facts and avoid manipulation. Christians are called to distinguish truth from lies, even if it comes at a high price. Truth is not for sale, justice cannot be trampled on. God will never be on the side of injustice.

Therefore, everyone who seeks the truth must stand up for it, not succumbing to manipulations and temptations of political games. Christian choices should always be based on God’s truth, not on fictitious benefits or fear of the authorities of this world.
