According to preliminary data, the missiles hit a densely populated part of the city. As of 13:00, according to the State Emergency Service, 24 people have been reported dead, including one child. Another 84 people were injured, seven of them children.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that the strikes hit the city center at a time when the streets were crowded – Sumy was celebrating Palm Sunday and a church service was taking place near the church. According to the minister, the enemy targeted civilians, realizing that there were many people there.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack on Sumy “another act of terror” that was deliberately directed against civilians:

“Only an inhuman person can target people going to church for a holiday. We need a tough and immediate response from the international community. The lives of Ukrainians depend on the determination of our allies.”

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov also emphasized that this was not an accident, but a deliberate attack on civilians, which requires immediate strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense system and real security guarantees.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the strike “absolute evil,” noting that Russia deliberately ignores peace initiatives and escalates the situation.

The missiles hit residential and administrative buildings, damaged educational institutions, cars and other infrastructure. The rescue operation is ongoing, and all emergency services are working at the scene.
