UCCRO: Russian aggression must be condemned and evil must be justly punished

On the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations UCCRO issued an appeal in which it emphasizes the need to condemn Russian aggression and achieve just punishment for evil. In its appeal, the UCCRO called on representatives of all religious traditions, both in Ukraine and abroad, to join in prayer for victory and a just peace.
“The highest justice requires condemnation of Russian aggression – evil cannot be rewarded but must be justly punished,” the document says.
February 24, 2025 marks three years since the beginning of the full-scale war and 11 years since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation. The UCCRO notes that thanks to the courage of the Ukrainian military and the support of the international community, the aggressor was unable to achieve its goals, and a significant part of the territory of Ukraine was liberated from occupation.
Consequences of aggression: destruction and persecution
The Russian war brought Ukraine not only physical destruction but also deep social and spiritual trauma. Among the main consequences:
- Large-scale destruction of cities and infrastructure.
- Persecution and destruction of religious communities in the temporarily occupied territories.
- Abduction of Ukrainian children and massive human rights violations.
- Violence against prisoners of war and civilians.
The UCCRO emphasized that the ideology of the “Russian world”, which is supported by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church, is one of the key driving forces of this war. Therefore, the international community must strongly condemn it.
Honoring fallen heroes and supporting soldiers
The Council called to honor the memory of everyone who gave their lives for the freedom of Ukraine and to pray for the strength and endurance of the defenders.
“We thank every Ukrainian soldier who stands in defense of the state, as well as everyone who contributes to our victory by strengthening the defense and supporting the people.”
The UCCRO also expressed gratitude to international partners who help Ukraine fight for democracy and human rights.
National Day of Prayer for Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided to annually celebrate February 24 as the National Day of Prayer. On this occasion, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches called on all believers to unite in a common prayer for victory and peace.
“We ask representatives of all denominations and religious organizations to raise their prayers to the Almighty and beg for peace and justice for our country.”
A call for unity
The appeal concludes with a reminder of the importance of the unity of the Ukrainian people and their unwavering faith in the victory of good over evil. The UCCRO emphasized that only through joint efforts will Ukraine be able to overcome the trials and restore justice.
“We call upon God’s blessing on Ukraine and its people!”
