On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Russian occupying forces launched a series of brutal attacks on civil and religious infrastructure in the Kharkiv region. A targeted missile strike in the city of Balakliya set ablaze and destroyed the building of the “Light of the Gospel” Evangelical Baptist Church, which served as a vital spiritual and humanitarian hub for the local community. Additionally, drone attacks in the region killed an elderly woman and left several others injured.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Balakliya—a strategically important railway junction and district administrative center—came under enemy fire twice during the day. One of the directed Russian missile strikes hit the Christian church directly. The building was instantly engulfed in massive flames, leaving the sanctuary practically reduced to rubble.
The Second Tragedy of a Resilient Congregation: Pastor Survived Torture, Now Church Is Bombed
The destruction of the “Light of the Gospel” church is an act of sheer cynicism, as this religious community had already endured the horrors of Russian occupation early in the full-scale invasion.
During the period of Russian control over the city, the pastor of this Baptist church was illegally arrested by Russian military forces. He was subjected to severe torture and left to die, but he miraculously survived. Following the brilliant liberation of Balakliya by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the courageous minister returned to the city to resume his service and help residents overcome the aftermath of the war. Now, the Russian army has chosen to destroy the very house of prayer, which, following traditional propaganda patterns, the occupiers once again targeted as a “military objective.”
Chronology of Saturday’s Terror in the Kharkiv Region
Russian troops attacked the Kharkiv region from early morning, utilizing various types of weaponry, including reactive strike drones and missiles.
-
Around 06:00 AM (Dergachi – Kozacha Lopan Highway): A Russian drone attacked a civilian VAZ car traveling on the highway between the villages of Nova Kozacha and Tsupivka. The direct hit killed the 86-year-old female passenger on the spot. The driver of the vehicle—her son—sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
-
Around 11:35 AM (Balakliya, First Wave): The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation struck the city with two reactive loitering munitions of the “Geran” type. One hit was recorded near a local sports complex, and another near an apartment building. The blast wave damaged vehicles and shattered windows in surrounding buildings. Three civilians sought medical assistance.
-
Afternoon (Balakliya, Second Wave): A direct hit by a Russian guided missile on the “Light of the Gospel” church building triggered a massive fire.
Systematic Destruction of Protestant Communities
Human rights advocates and religious scholars emphasize that the strike on the Baptist church in Balakliya is no coincidence. Russia continues to systematically and deliberately target evangelical churches all along the front lines.
These facilities do not merely conduct religious services; they operate as powerful volunteer hubs—distributing humanitarian aid, bread, and purified water, providing shelter for those who lost their homes, and organizing evacuations. It is precisely due to this active pro-Ukrainian and humanitarian stance that evangelical communities become priority targets for the totalitarian Kremlin regime, alongside other civilian infrastructure.
Currently, rescue teams from the State Emergency Service and investigative units remain at the scene in Balakliya to document this latest war crime against freedom of religion and humanity.
