Tucker Carlson spread fake news about “murders of Christians” in Ukraine, repeating Russian narratives

American TV presenter Tucker Carlson, known for his anti-Ukrainian statements, has published another manipulative video accusing Ukraine of “killing Christians” and torturing believers.

Experts call this material part of a Russian disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Ukraine in the West.

Carlson’s manipulative video

On his page on social network X (Twitter), Carlson stated:

“I’m talking about torture. Washington celebrates while Zelensky kills Christians.”

In the video, Carlson and lawyer Robert Amsterdam accuse Ukraine of “persecuting the Orthodox Church,” referring to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).

However, the video deliberately fails to mention that the UOC (MP) is not banned, but is only required to cease its subordination to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), which supports the war against Ukraine.

Manipulation and pro-Russian sources

In his conversation with Carlson, Amsterdam referred to the stories of fugitive politicians known for their support of the ROC.
Among them is Vadym Novynskyi, who, after fleeing Ukraine, received a religious rank in the ROC and in 2023 conducted a service in the Russian Orthodox Church in Zurich.

Novinsky is suspected of treason and violating the equality of citizens on religious grounds.
Another participant in the information campaign is former MP Dmitruk, who is hiding in the UK, where a trial is underway regarding his extradition to Ukraine.

Amsterdam repeated Dmitruk’s fake story, allegedly “proof of torture of Orthodox Christians,” which he had previously voiced in February this year — first on Carlson’s show, and even earlier by Russian representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

On Carlson’s show, Dmitruk was presented as a “defender of the canonical church,” although in reality he is a suspect in a number of criminal offenses.

Spreading Russian narratives

Dmytruk has already shared Carlson’s video on his Telegram channel.
Both Carlson and Amsterdam repeat the key themes of Russian propaganda about the “persecution of Orthodoxy” and the “war on Christianity,” which the Kremlin systematically uses to justify its aggression against Ukraine.

This is not the first time Carlson has spread disinformation about Ukraine.

  • In May 2024, he claimed that Ukraine was “involved in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.”
  • In June, Trump himself called Carlson “crazy.”
